This picture reminds me of something from a story that I read as a child. The main character was in some kind of serious trouble, and he encountered some animal - pictured like the squirrel above - whose mouth was full of something so that it could not respond to the distressed main character. I thought that perhaps it was something from Beatrix Potter, but a quick perusal of Peter Rabbit, Squirrel Nutkin, and Benjamin Bunny proved fruitless.
