Butterflies Revisited (Stamp Filter)

Revisiting some of my old butterfly images, the first here is an HDR image (the most colorful of the three) which I then processed into a layered black and white stamp filtered image (middle, my favorite of the three). Finally, the third image, where I layered the HDR into the black and white stamp filtered image, is a visually interesting presentation, in which the butterfly 'pops' a little bit more out of the image than it did in the original. Fall Leaves (HDR, Stamp Filter)

As we head into the autumn season, I haven't gone out for fall color pictures yet this year, but I did process a photo from a few years back. It's interesting (at least to me) to see how a picture - in which the color is so prominent - changes dramatically when shifted to black and white. The third image (the stamp filtered version with the color layered back in) really reminds me of a graphic novel image.

Bluebird In a Tree (HDR, Stamp Filter)

Three iterations of a bluebird in a tree with a leafy background: The first is the black and white stamp filtered image, the second - the colored version, and the third is the HDR-only rendition.

In the black and white version, the bluebird takes on a "Where's Waldo?" characteristic, in that -- you really have to look to find the bird. In the colored images, the bird stands out because the reddish-brown really stands out in contrast against the green background. (This is most evident in the HDR image.)

Mackinac Bridge (Stamp Filter)

Thinking back a couple of yesteryears ago to a visit to Mackinac Island and the ferry transit that took us by the Mackinac Bridge. I decided to see what my stamp filter process would do to an image of the bridge:

Female Finch in the Grass (HDR)

I watch the finches as they come around, quite frequently, picking their way through the grass. The finch here has something in her beak; probably breakfast.

Chipping Sparrow Jumping in the Grass (Stamp Filter)

The image of this series that I like best is the first, the black and white stamp filtered version. There was a weird smeariness across the top of the image in the HDR (bottom) that reappears in the colorized stamp filter (middle) that does not nearly stand out the same in the black and white image. It was fun watching the sparrow hop around in the grass (probably looking for bugs.) Female Cardinal (Dry Brush Filter)

When working with a very small image, the problem that I've found is that it doesn't translate very well through the stamp filter. (You can still make out what it's supposed to be in the second image below.) So, I did my other favorite thing and used the dry brush filter. It was nice to have a female cardinal stop by; they're one of my favorite birds to see.
