I decided to try a do-over on this cardinal image from a couple of years ago. The first image is what I came up with a couple of years ago, to give you an idea of what I was trying to improve.
This was my first pass on the image through Aurora HDR, in which I cropped the image (as well as processed it for high dynamic range).
The next image is the nominal edits that I applied in Photoshop Elements.
I also applied the Graphic Novel filter from Photoshop Elements:
And layered the color back in for the following:
