This photo is a zoo image (sorry, image may not be reused.) This was a nice close-up (which, again, I don't usually get in the wild) of a pileated woodpecker. I like the feathers on its back. It's eye is a little creepy. Thanks for stopping by and looking at my pictures! :)

Woodpecker v. Nuthatch Teeter-Totter on the Feeder

This is another image revisited from last year, in which a woodpecker and a nuthatch both landed on the feeder at the same time. Though the feeder rocked downward in the nuthatch's direction, the woodpecker is the bigger of the two birds. Thanks for stopping by!

Woodpecker (Pointilized)

Here is another bird image, a woodpecker, that suffered horribly (or, at least, somewhat minutely, or somewhere in between,) from noise. Taking an "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em," stance, I went ahead and made the "noise" even bigger - pointilizing it, and layering it into my black and white graphic novel version of the image. Teeter-Totter Nuthatch v. Woodpecker (Dry Brush Filter)

I've watched the woodpecker land and scare the other birds away (although, some of the birds have chased away the woodpecker, too...), but here we have a teeter-totter face-off between the woodpecker and the nuthatch. The nuthatch, having just come in for a landing, boosted the woodpecker up into the air. I'm sure that the feeder soon afterwards swung back in the other direction... Thanks for stopping by!

Today's picture comes in two version, the faraway and the close-up. The bird is a woodpecker, although, what kind of woodpecker, I cannot say. Using Google's "search visually similar images" feature, the most similar bird that I found was the juvenile version of the Red-bellied Woodpecker. (Although, that bird lacks the white stripes that you see around the eye and leading up to the beak on this bird.) Hmm... mystery woodpecker. If you have any ideas, leave them in the comments. Things Are Looking Up -- Woodpecker (Dry Brush Filter)

I knew that this was some sort of woodpecker, but the best that I can come up with for a more specific identification is a Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker. No, the belly doesn't look yellow (at least, not in this picture.) However, what I'm going on here is the head, with a red tuft both on the top and underneath the beak. I'm not completely convinced, but going from my bird book and from the pictures that I found online, this was the best with which I could come up. Thanks for stopping by!

Backyard Pileated Woodpecker

Looking out the window a few days ago, I saw a rather large shadow flying through my backyard. It turned out to be a pileated woodpecker! The bird stayed in one place for a long time, and (of course) eventually moved around to the back of the tree (and out of sight). I did, however, manage to take a few pictures of it while it was still within my line of sight. (I suppose the fact that woodpeckers seem to like the trees in my yard is not something that bodes well for the trees....) Thanks for stopping by!
