Fixing a Flicker (Graphic Novel filter)

Here is my original-ish image. Among other problems, the Flicker is sort of hidden in a shadow.

I ran the image above through the Graphic Novel filter on Photoshop Elements. (This is probably my favorite image of the three posted today.)

I layered the original color image back into the Graphic Novel filter image above. It looks like... a colorized Graphic Novel filter image, but I still think I like the BW best.

Flicker Redo (Graphic Novel filter)

My previous attempt on this Flicker image was posted as a Stamp filtered edit. I wasn't thrilled about the image, but like anything, editing photography is an experimental thing in which you learn from your mistakes as well as from your successes. (Some people argue that you learn more from your mistakes, in which case, I must really be learning...) I like the Graphic Novel version a lot better, although - I still don't think the image is quite where I would like it to be, but that's all I've got for today. Thanks for stopping by!

Flicker on the Feeder in the Rain (Graphic Novel filter)

I really like the color in the original of this series (the first,) but I really like the definition that comes through in the third image (Original Color + Graphic Novel filter). The flicker is a black and white bird, with just enough red thrown in to add some visual interest. (Notice I didn't crack a joke about what's black and white and red all....) Thanks for stopping by!

Flicker on a Tree (Graphic Novel filter)

Happy last day of January, everybody! For today's picture, I re-processed an image of a Flicker on a tree, hanging out next to some holes that had been knocked out by other woodpeckers. I like the lines (the squiggles?) that are brought out in this image by the Graphic Novel filter, which is why I like the Graphic Novel filter in general (for its squiggles.) Since the Graphic Novel filter processes images in black and white, I lightly layered the colored image back into the black and white for the second image that you see below. Flicker on a Tree (HDR, Stamp Filter)

I revisited an image from last year, figuring that tree bark would make an excellent candidate for the stamp filter layering process that I have been using. 

After blending together my images, I came up with this black and white version. While there is a LOT going on in the image for all of the background details, I like how you can still make out the Flicker.

The slightly colorized version brings the Flicker back, particularly where the back of its red head really makes it stand out.

Flicker on the Feeder

Now this was something a little bit different from the goldfinches that had been regularly visiting my feeder; a flicker is hanging from the ring (which, if too heavy, would "activate" the doors to close inside the feeder holes. This is a feature to prevent squirrels from getting to the bird seed.) It was a little bit unusual to see the flicker on the feeder; it seemed to be more of a ground feeder (or sometimes also a 'tree feeder' - looking for bugs.) Flicker on the Deck (Dry Brush Filter)

For all its faults, what I really liked about this picture was how close I was to the Flicker. Close-up, you can see all sorts of details on its body. I like the stripes on the wings. I like how the under-body looks something like a sponge, or like one some tree that a woodpecker has punched all sorts of holes into. I like the little red mark on the back of the Flicker's head. Flicker Checks Out a Hole in a Tree (Dry Brush Filter)

The holes in the tree were preexisting, at least, they were there before the Flicker came poking around. What was interesting to me was that the Flicker came and poked its head into the hole; maybe there was something in there worth finding? Flicker Looking for Bugs in the Dirt (Dry Brush Filter)

My favorite part about watching flickers is the dance that the birds do in the spring. Back in the spring of the year, we had a pair of flickers up in the tree outside of our house. It was the first that I had seen of the flickers, or at least, the first that I had noticed (because I was looking for birds with my camera.) Upon noticing the flickers in the tree, I watched them do a "dance" - a coordinated choreography in which they nodded back and forth to each other on the tree. I'm sure that it was some kind of courtship (being spring and all.) The picture above, taken in mid-summer, is not nearly as interesting, where the lone flicker is looking for bugs in the dirt, which is pretty much what I saw the flicker doing for the next several months after I first noticed it. Red Heart on the Back of a Flicker's Head (Dry Brush Filter)

I've noticed before the red mark on the back of the Northern Flicker's head, but I had never quite realized how much it could resemble the shape of a heart until I happened to see it in this photograph.
